With the drop in temperatures, the extreme forecasted cold weather in Northeast Ohio this weekend, and the potential for incoming winter storms, we want to share some resources with our students, faculty, staff, and families for safety and warmth in extreme cold.

The City of Cleveland has activated four recreation centers to serve as warming stations. These facilities are open to anyone needing a warm place to stay.

  • Hours: 11:30 AM – 10:00 PM

  • Locations:

    • West Side: Michael Zone Recreation Center (6301 Lorain Ave.)

    • Near Downtown: E.J. Kovacic Recreation Center (6250 St. Clair Ave.)

    • Northeast: Collinwood Recreation Center (16300 Lakeshore Blvd.)

    • Southeast: Zelma George Recreation Center (3155 Martin L. King Jr. Blvd.)

    • Cuyahoga county has also shared a survey for those needing access to warming centers and overnight shelters, which can be accessed by clicking here.

If overnight shelter is required, these centers can help provide transportation to appropriate facilities. Additionally, calling 211 can help connect with resources and appropriate facilities.

Additional Resources:

  • Transportation: RTA is providing free, transportation any time to people trying to reach shelter – let your driver know that you are travelling to transit center or railway station to take shelter as a warming station when you board.

  • Akron Area: The Summit Lake Community Center is open with extended hours, and the Emergency Overnight Warming Center (111 East Voris St.) is open 7 PM – 8 AM.

  • Suburban Locations: Many senior centers and community centers serve as warming stations during business hours.

Stay warm and stay safe!
